NPP MPs are always in a rush to commit errors – Mahama Ayariga

The Minister of Information and Media Relations, Mahama Agyariga, has labeled the minority’s decision to accuse the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Doe Adjaho of bias after he prevented the House from debating the sale of Merchant Bank to Fortiz, as an uncouth act which was alien to the august body.

Speaking on Joy FM’s News File show, the minister stated that the NPP’s press conference was regrettable and was organized purposely to attack the integrity of the speaker.

According to him, a former late Speaker of Parliament, Peter Ala Adjetey, had previously warned and advised the House not to subject its leader to public ridicule after ruling on a matter. But this golden advice, according to Mr Agyariga, seems to have fallen on deaf ears and spurred the minority MPs to err.

According to him, the speaker took the decision because he was simply carrying the core responsibilities of parliament and was waiting for the court to finish adjudicating on the matter.

Hon. Ayariga recounted how the same uncalculated rush led the NPP into the big disgrace when they hurriedly went to court to stop the creation of 45 new constituencies by the Electoral Commission of Ghana which they lost.

He explained that when the NPP decided to go to court over the matter, the speaker of the House urged them to wait until parliament had first passed the law. But because the NPP couldn’t cope with this, they went to court and realized that the decision was lawful one, Hon. Ayariga said.

He urged them to be calculative and bear with state institutions when decisions are being taken.
