The chairman of the Berekum National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. I. K. Obeng, has described the NPP government as the most disgraceful and ill disciplined since Ghana?s independence, for naming a six (6) HIPC benefit classroom block meant for Roman Catholic School after the party. Inscribed into the wall was ?NPP HIPC.? He said Ghana had passed through the hands of many governments with a lot of infrastructure and developments, but none of these governments sought such shameful self acclamation.
The chairman, who expressed disappointment in the NPP government, urged President Kufuor and his officials to stop throwing dust into the eyes of Ghanaians and make the truth known to the people, because ?HIPC BENEFIT? was not solely for the NPP.
Mr. I. K. Obeng made this assertion to The Chronicle as it investigated the issue, at the NDC constituency secretariat at Berekum, Brong Ahafo Region.
He stated that, ?NDC will never stop criticising the incapability of the NPP government to develop the country, if they do not thwart claiming ownership of HIPC fund projects?, stressing that ?HIPC benefit is meant for all Ghanaians.?
The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Berekum, Mr. Kwabena Kyere-Yeboah, speaking to The Chronicle, admitted the fact of the issue, and said that he had questioned the contractor of the building about it when the Assembly was inspecting the project.
He asked the people not to politicise this ?mere? issue because the party had had no intention of writing that ?NPP HIPC? on the building. According to the DCE, the contractor was on no grounds manipulated by the NPP to make that design on the wall, adding that, ?this could be one of the contractor?s architectural designs.?
Mr. Kyere-Yeboah however assured the people of any immediate effort to get rid of the design.
The Building Contractor, Mr. Owusu told the paper that he did not write those words (NPP / HIPC) on the building intentionally, but was rather writing alphabets when the black – coloured burnt bricks got finished.
?I was not asked by anybody to formulate such a design; I did it myself. I did not mean to write ?NPP? on the wall,? the contractor defended.
