NPP election not visible in Accra Metropolis

Accra, Aug. 7, GNA – In spite of the euphoric atmosphere created by the media about the historic election of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the last couple of months, Accra Metropolis remained “calm and business as usual,” on Saturday, August 7.

About 113,000 delegates of the party are voting to elect a Flag bearer for Election 2012.

A tour of some principal streets, markets and lorry stations in Accra by Ghana News Agency observed that business activities was going on briskly while the traffic situation remained normal.

At the Mallam Atta Market at Accra New Town, the whole vicinity was chocked with customers and sellers, while heavy trucks and other commercial vehicles were noticed either off-loading or loading goods and passengers.

Other markets visited include Kaneshie; Osu, Makola main, and Alajo; and the lorry stations at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Ho-Hohoe Station, Tema Station in Accra.

Nana Esi Ashong, a trader at Kaneshe market told GNA, “if they are voting, that is their business and we are also here to do our business.its all about how to make money”.

Nana Esi in spite of the lukewarm attitude wished the NPP well.

Ms Naomi Mirekua, a teacher whom GNA met at one of the markets noted: “My brother, I am not a delegate, so I don’t think I have any business at the polling station”.

In the last National Delegates Congress on December 22, 2007, NPP supporters stirred Accra up as delegates drove through some principal streets with fanfare and drumming.

The enthusiastic delegates, observers, aspirants and the cross-section of the supporters hyped up with various Ghanaian cultural display especially dancers from the northern part of the country, who displayed their physical fitness through dancing.
