NPP elder arrested for killing Rawlings’ dog

A constituency council of elder of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwesi Banahene, has been arrested by the police for allegedly inflicting cutlass wounds on a dog belonging to former President Jerry John Rawlings.

The dog eventually died of its wounds, according to reports. But the NPP executive members in the South Tongu Constituency in the Volta region are calling for the release of their member whom they claimed is innocent.

The Constituency Chairman of the NPP in South Tongu, Emmanuel Adama, told Joy News police personnel from the Headquarters in Accra were assigned to affect the arrest in the region.

He was first sent to Tefle Police Station before later being processed for Accra, he said.

Mr Banahene, he stressed, was arrested on Tuesday “on allegation that former President Rawlings has lodged a complaint against him for [slashing] his dog about seven weeks ago, of which the man is not aware of.”

He said efforts to locate the whereabouts of their colleague have proven futile. According to him, the police refused to grant him bail yesterday when the son, Papa Banahene, attempted to bail him.

He was told in the evening that the father would be transferred to the Nima Police cell, “but we don’t know his whereabouts, we are very worried, members are getting agitated,” Mr Adama narrated.
