The National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Harona Esseku, last Wednesday, stunned other members of the National Executive Committee of the party when he openly threatened to resign his position if the President does not remove the Central Regional Minister, Isaac Edumadze from office.
Mr Esseku’s effusions emanated from allegations that Mr Edumadze was behind moves by some regional and constituency executives of the NPP to pass a vote of no confidence in the Central Regional Chairman of the Party, Dr Kweku Nunoo Ghartey.
When the Independent newspaper contacted the General Secretary of the NPP, Dan Botwe, he said he could not recall Esseku issuing that threat but “our source who is also a national executive committee member of the party, maintained that Esseku, indeed, did issue the threat” the paper noted.
This was after Dan Botwe put off to the future, a discussion of the response to allegations accompanying the call for a vote of no confidence. Mr Esseku is the one who called for the discussion.
According to the source, Mr Esseku at a point told the executive members that Dr Ghartey had responded to the 18 point resolution of no confidence vote against him, but was told by Dan Botwe that since other executive members had not been served with copies, the matter could not be discussed.
At this juncture, Mr Esseku, out of frustration and desperation yelled, “as for me, I have said that if the President does not remove Edumadze I will resign my position as the National Chairman of NPP”.
When contacted, a National Executive member who pleaded anonymity confirmed the story but said “we are all surprised at Mr Esseku’s behaviour, in that we are aware that Dr Ghartey is not a good politician and as a Medical Officer he is always very busy at his clinic in Accra”.
