NPP approached 2016 polls the ‘African’ way – Awuku

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, has said the party approached the just-ended presidential and parliamentary elections the “African way”, rather than the “European way”, hence its historic victory.

According to him, the European way of approaching an election is when the parties involved go to sleep after voting, trusting that the electoral system would handle the process, whereas the African way is sacrificing sleep and being extra vigilant throughout the process.

The NPP opted for the latter in the December polls, he said.

The NPP won the presidential elections with 5,716,026 votes, representing 53.85 per cent, whereas the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) managed to poll 4,713,277 votes, representing 44.40%. At the parliamentary level, the NPP won 170 seats whereas the NDC won 105.

Speaking in relation to this historic victory on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Friday December 23, Mr Awuku said: “This time round we did not approach the elections the European way because we have done it before and suffered for it. This time we approached it the African way.

“The European way is when you vote and sleep in the comfort of your home trusting that the system will work perfectly. After losing, you go round blaming people and in the end say: ‘this is democracy’ and all of that. We have done that before but we suffered for it, so we did not opt for that approach this year.”
