NPP: ‘All-die-be-die’ mock question ‘irresponsible’

Ghana’s biggest opposition party, NPP, has described the politically tainted mock examination question for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates in Pusiga as absurd and irresponsible.

Question 18 of the English paper for the district mock examination asked the candidates to choose from a set of possible answers, the one which was nearest in meaning to the word CANVASSED, as captured in the sentence: “Nana Addo, popularly known as ‘all-die-be-die,’ canvassed for votes.”

In an interview with Class News, Regional Education Director Janet Kawia condemned the act and said it will be probed.

Meanwhile, Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, Perry Okudzeto, speaking to Class News, said it was irresponsible for teachers to drag students into political propaganda.

“It is absurd and irresponsible for anybody to drag pupils, who are going to write an exam, into frontline politics and try to indoctrinate them with political propaganda,” he stated.

“It is very irresponsible for anybody to do such a thing because a mock exam is expected to mirror the kind of questions that WAEC will set for pupils in an examination.

In his estimation, those behind the question have done more harm than good to the pupils, since the politically tainted question deviates from set standards of the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

“I think that these are things that society should stand up to and correct. Our politics is getting into a certain realm that will not help the development of this country.”
