Tamale, July 1, GNA – An activist of the New Patriotic Party, Bashiru Mohammed, alias “Red”, is to appear before a Tamale court on Friday for possessing firearm without lawful authority and offensive conduct.
He is currently being held by the Northern Regional Police Command after being arrested in Accra a couple of days ago.
The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Ebenezer Tetteh told the
Ghana News Agency in Tamale on Wednesday that the conduct of the suspect occurred during the
2004 voter’s registration exercise where he was alleged to have fired gun shots at a polling station. He was also alleged to have made comments, which infuriated people around the polling station
and they hooted at him. Chief Inspector Tetteh said the suspect left the polling station and returned later with a gun and
shot at the people and bolted away in his car but no one was hurt from the gun shots. He said the suspect was arrested later and put before a Tamale circuit court, which also remanded
him in prison custody, but was granted bail for want of prosecution. Chief Inspector Tetteh said the witnesses to the case were currently ready and prepared to testify
in court hence his re-arrest. He would be put in court on Friday.
