Actress Gloria Sarfo has declared her decision to stop advocating for Ghana’s movie industry, following intense backlash over her recent comments on its lack of progress.
In an earlier Instagram post, Sarfo criticised the state of the film industry, expressing disappointment over what she described as its failure to utilise the talents of actors and lack of meaningful progress. The post sparked swift criticism from some insiders, who accused her of seeking attention and downplaying the industry’s efforts.
Amid growing scrutiny and personal attacks, Sarfo returned to Instagram on July 20 to set the record straight. In a passionate response, she dismissed claims of clout-chasing and insisted her words came from a place of genuine concern.
“God knows I didn’t post that for clout chasing!! God knows I didn’t intend to demean anyone or my country!!” she wrote. “God knows that I had good intentions with that post!!”
She expressed disappointment at the reactions from both seasoned players and upcoming talents in the industry, noting that even those she sought to defend turned against her.
“Even the young ones I was intentionally fighting for, also came to express their ignorance and disrespect me!!” she added.
Sarfo also called out media pundits who, she claimed, publicly ridiculed her instead of engaging with the real issues. In a sarcastic tone, she said, “Let’s all pretend that it is all rosy publicly, and cry privately!! Yes, we have a perfect industry, one that is solid, no talent is being wasted, producers treat actors very well, and pay them good!!”
Frustrated by the backlash and lack of honest dialogue, Sarfo ended her statement by distancing herself from further advocacy work in the industry.
“Indeed, an industry not worth fighting for!! I rest my case!!” she concluded, adding that she would now focus solely on her own career.
