Kumasi, July 19, GNA – Wulugu Naba Pugansoa Naa Professor John Nabila, President of the National House of Chiefs (NHC), has raised concern about the influx of illegal West African ‘Galamsey’ miners in the Northern Region.
The worst affected area is the Bole-Bamboi District where, an estimated 8,000 migrants, mainly from Senegal, Burkina-Faso and Guinea are involved in the illegal mining business.
Wulugu Nabila warned that the situation, if not tackled, could have negative environmental, security and health implications on the development of the region.
He was addressing the second general meeting of the NHC in Kumasi.
Issues the chiefs discussed included the Chieftaincy Act, Draft Land Bill, the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Culture Sector Policy for harmonization and validation programme.
They also discussed the causes and resolution of chieftaincy and land conflicts.
Wulugu Nabila said illegal mining in whatever form was destructive to the environment, therefore, the Minerals Commission should work together with all stakeholders to stop the practice.
He also advised his colleague chiefs not to condone illegal mining activities in their communities, saying this was necessary to protect the eco-system.
