Northern Region needs more support in education development – Banahene

Tamale, Dec. 7, GNA – The Northern Region needs more education infrastructure to meet the aspiration of the people, Mr. Fosuaba Mensah Banahene, Administrator of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (Getfund) said on Thursday.

He said this called for a sustained increase of funding in education to improve classrooms, dormitories laboratories in most of the second cycle and tertiary institutions in the region. Mr. Banahene said this when he paid a courtesy call on the Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mustapha Ali Idris, in Tamale. He also interacted with the Regional and Metropolitan Directors of Education.

The Getfund Administrator is in the region to inspect Getfund projects at the University for Development Studies (UDS), the Tamale Polytechnic, the “CAN 2008” hostel, Tamale Girls’ Secondary School and Northern Business Secondary School.

Mr. Banahene commended local contractors working on the projects for performing creditably to job specifications. Alhaji Idris urged the Getfund to consider the Tamale Girls’ Secondary School in the allocation of funds and projects to cater for girls’ education in the region.

He appealed to the contractor working on the Girls’ Secondary School project to speed up work to enable the girls to be relocated to the new site.

He also urged the Getfund to consider the five created districts in the region that had been directed to put up boarding senior secondary schools.

“Looking at their financial constraints, most of these districts need Getfund intervention to accomplish this objective”, he said.
