‘No wholesale dismissal of pupil teachers’

There is no policy decision to embark on a wholesale dismissal of all pupil teachers, Deputy Minister in charge of tertiary Education, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has said.

His clarification follows comments on social media suggesting that the Ministry intends sacking all untrained teachers at the basic schools before school re-opens.

“All should kindly ignore messages making the rounds on social media purporting that my boss Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has asked re-opening of schools to be postponed so all pupil teachers can be sacked”, Ablakwa said on Facebook.

“For the avoidance of doubt, re-opening of Senior High Schools and other basic schools is still slated for the 16th of September, 2014”, he noted.

The Ghana Education Service recently announced it will phase out all untrained teachers to make room for trained teachers at the basic level.
