No soldier arrested with poll material – GAF

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has denied media reports that some soldiers have been arrested for transporting weapons from Kumasi to Accra.

According to the security service, a report by Kumasi-based Kessben FM, repeated by some members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) alleged that some soldiers were arrested for using military Troop Carry Vehicles (TCVs) to carry items which were initially believed to be electoral materials but turned out to be weapons and ammunition.

“GAF wishes to categorically state that the publication by Kessben FM was false and the allegations by the NPP officials baseless,” a statement signed by colonel E Aggrey-Quashie, Director of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces said.

According to GAF, their checks from the Ashanti Regional Police Command and other security agencies in the Region did not confirm any of the allegations made against them. “The said TCV mentioned in the allegation was a GAF vehicle which was returning to Kumasi from Accra with military stores notably boot combat and web equipment,” the statement explained.

The Military High Command has assured Ghanaians and especially residents of Kumasi that under no circumstance would they do anything to disrupt the smooth running of the 7 December 2016 elections.

“GAF would continue to carry out its constitutionally mandated duty of protecting the citizenry and also support the other sister security services in the maintenance of law and order in the country,” the statement added.
