No place to hide in case of violence – Minister

The Upper West Regional Minister Alhaji Amidu Sulemana is urging politicians to be mindful of their comments as the nation prepares for the November general elections.

The Minister who made the comment during Senior Citizens’ day in Wa on Friday, advised Ghanaians especially politicians to consider the series of wars in neighbouring Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast whenever they make statements.

Alhaji Amidu said,” if you look at what happened in Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Mali, you would realize that we have nowhere to go in case of any upheaval. The only place we have as a safe border is the sea and we should ask ourselves, how many people in the coastal areas can swim talk less of those of us up North?”.

In this regard we as politicians need the advice of those of you who have seen it all to make responsible statements ahead of the elections to ensure that we maintain the peace we are currently enjoying as a people’, he admonished.

The Regional Minister also enumerated some interventions government is putting in place to support the elderly in the country.

He mentioned the free registration of the aged under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and the urban card for metro mass transit.
According to Alhaji Amidu, government is committed to improving on the wellbeing of the citizenry.

Present at the occasion were Former Ambassadors, Ministers, Retired Educationists, Broadcasters and a host of other retired persons.

The Senior Citizens’ day is celebrated on the 1st of July each year to honour senior citizens for their dedication to duty while in active service.
