…. Of Office Of Former President
Government Spokesperson, Elizabeth Ohene says there is no readily available money to service the outstanding telephone bills of the Office of the President at the Castle, Osu. The 5.2 billion cedi debt was left behind by former President Rawlings.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ghana Telecom, Professor S.K. B. Asante at the weekend disclosed that a number of public institutions including the seat of the Presidency owed Ghana Telecom a total of 26.8 billion Cedis as at the end of March this year.
The Government Spokesperson told JOY FM that government would have to resort to some negotiations with Ghana Telecom for the settlement of the bills. “The previous government was one of the important customers of Ghana Telecom so they had to keep them going. We will talk to them to find a better way of paying. If they decide to write off some of the debts, we will like it.”
Although Miss Ohene noted that debt must have accumulated because they were unattended to, she was quick to add that government is expected to pay bills that accrue from the office of the President and the current government will have to find a way of paying them.
