Half Assini (W/R), Jan. 23, GNA – The expectations of Women Advocacy Groups in the country, to have more women representation in the district Assembly, did not materialise in the Jomoro district, as no woman won a seat during the District Assembly Election, held in December, last year.
A survey conducted by the Ghana News Agency in the Jomoro District revealed that, all the three female candidates, who contested the election in the district lost to their male counterparts.
According to the survey, if no woman is considered in the government appointees by the authorities of the district, the 34-member Assembly will be without any woman for the next four years.
The survey further revealed that, since the District Assembly concept was introduced in 1988, only two women have won elections in the Jomoro district to represent the people at the Assembly.
They were madam Mary Asane-Kwaw Nyanda, for Adonwozo Electoral area, in Half Assini, in 1988, and Ms Veronica Cudjoe, for Mpataba Electoral Area, in 1998.
Since then, no woman has ever won the District Assembly election, however Madam Samiah Yaba Nkrumah, daughter of Osagyfo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, first President of Ghana, is representing the people in Parliament.
