NLC orders NAGRAT to properly notify employers

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) to properly serve notice of their intended strike on their employers in accordance with section 159 of Act 651.

The Commission also pleaded with NAGRAT for the intended strike to be postponed.

A statement issued by Mr. Martin Didemudo, Director, Industrial Relations of the Commission, said it has invited the parties including NAGRAT, Ministries of Finance, Education, Employment and Labour Relations and Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to a meeting on May 21, to resolve the impasse.

It said in pursuant to a notice on May 7, by NAGRAT to embark on a strike, the Commission invited the executives and Ghana Education Service to a meeting on May 12.

It said NAGRAT was unable to attend the meeting for specific reasons in a letter on May 12. However, the GES was represented by the Acting Director-General and the Head of Legal Department.

The statement said the Commission having pursued the letter of notification and listened to the GES representatives noted that NAGRAT did not comply fully with section 159 of the Labour Act 2003, (Act 651).

The statement said NAGRAT in its letter of May 12, 2014 proposed that the meeting be rescheduled to Monday, May 19, a date beyond the effective date of the intended strike.
