Nkwanta-South District to revitalize local governance structures

Nkwanta, April 07, GNA – Mr Joseph Ninkab, District Chief Executive for Nkwanta South, has called on the District Assembly and its staff to work towards revitalizing the substructures of the Assembly. He said the Urban, Town and Area Councils (UTA’s) as the nerve centres of decentralized local government were vital to guaranteeing grassroots participation in decision making and mobilization of the people for development. “We are all witnesses to the many weaknesses inherent in the UTA’s and we must collectively fix the inadequacy”, Mr Ninkab told the Ghana News Agency in an interview.

He said the Assembly has therefore initiated programmes aimed at motivating the UTA’s to deliver on their mandate as agents of development in the district. Mr Ninkab urged the various agencies in the district to co-operate among themselves and with the Assembly to deliver on their collective mandates to the people. He said the District Security Committee has approved a number of measures including the construction of a security barrier at Oti on the Hohoe-Nkwanta road, where armed robbers have been harassing travellers. Mr Ninkab called on investors in the agriculture sector to come to the Nkwanta area, which abounds in arable lands suitable for agriculture. 07. April, 2010
