It’s official. The highly anticipated tournament schedule for the 1st Annual Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Challenge Cup Soccer tournament has been released. The tournament which honors the first president of Ghana Dr. Nkrumah will be played at the soccer field on Long Islands University’s Brooklyn Campus in Brooklyn, New York. The tournament kicks off this Saturday, June 9th and Sunday, June 10th with two high profile teams each from the Bronx and New Jersey. All of the teams featured in this year’s tournament present an interesting mix of some very talented African players on their roster. Rumor has it that some former national team players will be present on the pitch! Although, the tournament features mostly Ghanaian players, some of the nationalities boasted by the football clubs include Mali, Senegal, Togo, Ivory Coast, and Nigeria thus, adding to the diversity of the event.
Nasare Sports Foundation and Nasare Athletics the organizers of this event are very grateful for all the teams who registered for the event and look forward to expanding the tournament to more African based communities in the future. It goes without saying that in order for this to become possible, a great amount of support from the community will be needed. Finally, all are invited to come support this inaugural event in an effort to show Brooklyn, New York that the African community is alive and well!
