Nkoranza Queen-mothers launch girls’ education campaign

The Nkoranza Queen-Mothers Association has launched an educational campaign to promote girls education in the Nkoranza Traditional Area.

The programme would also educate the populace on the adverse effects of teenage pregnancies on the family and society.

Nana Owusuaa Ayiwa, Secretary of the Association, told the Ghana News Agency at Nkoranza on Monday that it was their concern to encourage young girls to further their education to higher levels.

Nana Ayiwa, Queen-mother of Sikaa in Nkoranza South, expressed concern about the increasing number of teenage pregnancies in the communities, saying the Association has called for the reinforcement of puberty rites in the traditional area to serve as a check on the girls to abstain from pre-marital sex.

She said chiefs in the area had been asked to support the queen mothers in ensuring strict adherence to the custom of puberty rites by their subjects.

She emphasised the need for couples to remain faithful to each other and respect each other’s views to promote effective communication and understanding.

She warned that men who impregnated women and young girls and later denied responsibility would be summoned before court to face the full rigours of the law.

Nana Ayiwa urged her fellow female traditional leaders to encourage the women to keep their environments clean to prevent the outbreak of epidemics.
