The Nkoranza Municipal Assembly, has disbursed an amount of GHC74, 000 to 30 disabled persons, to engage in income-generating ventures to enhance their livelihoods.

The beneficiaries include amputees, the deaf and blind, and others who have difficulty in walking.

Madam Stella Amoatemaa, Nkoranza Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), who distributed the cheques to the beneficiaries, urged them to use the money judiciously, so as to improve upon their livelihoods.

Madam Amoatemaa gave the assurance that the Assembly would keep on supporting disabled persons whenever the Assembly received its share of the Common Fund, in order to achieve the Fund’s aim of mitigating poverty among persons with disabilities.

She called on Management of the Fund, to ensure fairness and not be discriminatory in selecting beneficiaries for consideration and attention.

The MCE announced that the Assembly has been paying much attention to the disabled persons who are pursuing their education from the Basic Schools through the Tertiary Institutions, not only to equip them with basic academic tools, but also come out and support education in the Municipality.

Mr. Douglas Musah, Nkoranza Municipal Social Welfare Officer, commended the Assembly for considering the plight of persons with disabilities, and assisting in their rehabilitation.

Mr. Musah was grateful to government for the establishment of the Disability Fund, as it had encouraged a number of disabled persons to engage in income-generating ventures to enhance their livelihoods.

The Chairman of the Nkoranza Municipal Branch of the Ghana National Federation of Disabilities, Mr. Sufuyan Mintah, was appreciative of government’s efforts of improving the lives of persons with disabilities.

Mr. Mintah advised his colleagues to desist from moving about in the streets to beg for alms, explaining that such negative attitudes and practices would amount to a show of ungratefulness to government’s support.
