Nkonya-Alavanyo conflict: Government investigates gun attacks on Soldiers

Some unknown persons last Friday opened fire on some military personnel deployed to maintain law and order in Alavanyo and Nkonya in the Volta Region.

The military personnel exchanged gun fire with the unknown attackers in defense for more than an hour before calm was restored.

Renewed violence in the area, some days ago killed three people, but security in the area has since been tightened amidst talks to end the age old conflict in the area.

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Achibald Letsa said the unknown shooters hid in the bush on the hills and fired at the military personnel, but the soldiers fired back in defense. No casualties were involved.

He said the Regional Security Council is working round the clock to ensure calm in the area.

“If you visit the area, you’ll realize that it is a very mountainous area and they hide in the bush and trees and they fire. And when they attacked the military, the military also had the right to defend themselves, and that is what is going on. Everything is under control-The General Officer Commanding, the Southern Sector has been with us, the Commanding Officer of the 66 Artillery Regiment, we are all here going to discuss what next of action to take. We’ve made recommendations to the National Security.”
