Nkawie-Toase Hospital transformed into Baby Friendly facility

Nkawie (Ash), Aug 30, GNA- The Nkawie-Toase Government Hospital has been transformed into a Baby Friendly facility to promote exclusive breastfeeding among other things and to reduce the infant mortality rate.

Dr P.C. Awuah, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, speaking at the inaugural ceremony said the hospital started as a maternity home but by dint of hard work it was upgraded to a full-fledged hospital in 2000. He said the hospital also serves as a Buruli Ulcer surgical centre for patients around the area.

He appealed to the Atwima District Assembly to release land for the construction of a permanent theatre to cater for the increasing cases of the disease.

Miss Anna Ofori, acting Atwima District Director of Health Services, advised nursing mothers to adhere strictly to counselling given to them at the hospital. She also explained the advantages of breastfeeding to babies and mothers.

Nana Boakye Dankwa, Chief of Mim-Achiase, who chaired the function, unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion. 30 Aug 04
