Nineteen killed in motor accidents in Awutu-Efutu-Senya District

in 2003

Winneba (C/R), Feb.4 GNA – Nineteen people were killed and 418 others received various degrees of injuries in 166 motor accidents in the Awutu-Efutu-Senya District, particularly on the Winneba – Accra Road in 2003.

The Winneba District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nicolas Gasu, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Tuesday.

Mr Gasu, 34 persons were killed and 313 received various degrees of injuries in 1,244 accidents, involving 273 vehicles, in 2002. He attributed the lower figures for last year to intensive patrol duties and education by personnel of his outfit.

He said most of the accidents happened as a result of speeding, wrongful overtaking and “lack of good judgment on the part of the drivers”.

Mr Gasu appealed to drivers to cooperate with contractors engaged in the reconstruction of the road.

On the crime, Gasu said the District recorded only a handful of domestic crimes.
