Nima no longer a den for criminals

Accra, Aug. 22, GNA – It is about time that Ghanaians disbused their minds about the awidely held perception that Nima is a den of criminals and crimes, Amasaba Abdul-Yakeen Aluizah, Former Secretary, Nima Community Watch Dog (NCWD), has said.

Speaking with the Ghana News Agency on Monday in Accra Mr Aluiza said the Nima Watchdog handles all manner of cases ranging from domestic, marital, fraud to juvenile delinquency and there had been a reduction in the crime rate in Nima, which had paved way for 17 banks to operate in the community as of today.

He added that taxi drivers no longer hesitate to drop passengers in Nima and that the recalcitrant in Nima were being driven-out of the community, adding NCWD was committed to fighting indiscipline. Mr Aluiza said fighting crime in society is about 80 per cent civil information to the police from the public and 20 per cent police action.

He said fighting crime in society was first the responsiblity of the individual, which had been the philososphy for the NCWD to help fight crimes and cure the Nima community of social exclusion. Mr Aluiza said NCWD was involved in operations that led to the closure of Soldier Bar brothel at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra and had also provided immense assistance to the police in apprehending wanted and harden criminals like Abu Terror, drug peddlers and telecommunication cable thieves.

He called on the inhabitants to expose the criminals within the community and added that the activities of NCWD had compelled people to walk on the street of Nima without trepidation. Mr Aluiza again appealed to government to support the group to enable it to discharge its duties efficiently at all times.
