Nii Ashietey urges Ga chiefs to unite for peaceful Homowo

Accra, Aug. 5, GNA – Nii Armah Ashietey, Greater Accra Regional Minister has called on chiefs and people in the Ga Traditional Area to unite ahead of this year’s celebration of Homowo festival.

He said unity was important in every aspect of the society and in finding lasting solution to the existing problems.

Nii Ashietey made the call at a meeting with the newly elected Chief Fisherman from the Osu Alata Clan, Nii Dzamrodza V in Accra on Thursday.

He said the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) was concerned about chieftaincy disputes and would not condone any of such acts which could bring mayhem into the society during the festival celebration.

“The GARCC would not allow the outdoor sprinkling of ‘kpokpoi’ during the festival in places where there are misunderstanding and clashes may occur,” he said.

However, the Regional Minister noted that littering and defecation on the beaches had become the order of the day in the city and urged the chiefs to endeavour to ensure that such practices were eliminated from the society.

Nii Ashietey said the beaches were places of business as far as tourism was concerned and efforts should be made to maintain them.

He congratulated Nii Dzamrodza on his appointment and urged him to use his position to promote fishing and put a stop to the bad practices in the fishing industry.

Nii Ashietey presented a cheque for GH¢1,000 to Nii Dzamrodza to support his activities.

Nii Dzamrodza said plans were underway to stop the practice of littering and defecation at the beaches, and warned to deal with offenders.

He expressed gratitude to the Regional Minister for his support and gave the assurance to improve conditions at the fishing community in the metropolis.

Nii Dzamrodza urged chiefs to remain united to prevent the re-occurrence of disputes in their areas of jurisdiction.
