Nii Adotey Obour II banned from celebrating Homowo

The Judicial Committee of the Ga Traditional Council has placed an interlocutory injunction on Nii Adotey Obuor II, a claimant to the Sempe Stool, from celebrating the upcoming Homowo as a regent of Sempe.

The committee in a ruling on a suit filed by Nii Adotey Korle Bu II and two others praying for an ex-parte order of an interlocutory injunction on Nii Adotey Obuor II ordered that, “Nii Adotey Obuor II, his servants, agents, privies whosoever and his assigns are for the next ten days following this order restrained from entering the Sempe Mantse Palace and celebrating or holding himself out” as Sempe Mantse.

The Judicial Committee, which is the highest court in the traditional setting also banned Nii Adotey Obuor from “celebrating in the name of the Sempe Stool this year’s annual Sempe Homowo Foood and/or sprinkling the same in the traditional locations or elsewhere and/or by going about on the day following the Homowo festival conveying to or exchanging the traditional season’s festive greetings with any person within the Sempe area of Accra.”

A few weeks ago, Nii Adote Korle-Bu, Head of Kpakpo Barima We, Nii Ashalley Asuku, Head of Tetteh Kpeshie We and Nii Ayi Doku, Head of Saka Tsuru We, the Kingmakers of Sempe had argued that Nii Adote Obour, a claimant to the stool, was rightfully destooled in 1994 with all the customary rights to that effect performed, and Nii Otintor II was subsequently enstooled as occupant of the Sempe Stool.

However, due to the bureaucratic processes that must be undertaken to correct the gazetting of the destooled Chief, some unscrupulous individuals were using the delay as a right to claim the stool and subsequently misappropriate properties of the Sempe State.
