Accra, Feb 01, GNA – A 29-year old Nigerian who was arrested by security personnel at the Kotoka International Airport for attempting to smuggle cocaine out of the country was on Wednesday put before an Accra Regional Tribunal.
David Igbinlegie Osaro pleaded not guilty for possessing and attempting to export narcotic drugs without lawful authority. The three-member tribunal chaired by Mr Justice Frank Manu remanded Osaro in prison custody and adjourned the case to February 7. The facts of the case as presented by the prosecution are that on April 21 last year, the accused person arrived at the airport to board a KLM flight to Amsterdam.
While he was going through departure formalities, personnel of the Narcotics Control Board suspected him of carrying foreign material in his stomach and therefore escorted him to the 37 Military Hospital to an undergo x-ray examination.
The prosecution said Osaro expelled 90 pellets of whitish substance believed to be narcotic drugs.
According to the prosecution, the accused person was subsequently handed over to the police for further investigations. During police interrogation, he named one James as the person who asked him to deliver the items to somebody in Holland for a fee. A report on the examination from the Ghana Standards Boards showed that the substance was a narcotic drug.
