ABUJA – Nigeria’s President Olusegun Obasanjo denied Thursday allegations that he had sent troops to interfere with in Ghana’s presidential election.
“There is no evidence whatsoever of Nigerian soldiers on the ground there. There is no iota of truth whatsoever in the allegations that were made against our country and our president,” said Obasanjo’s spokeswoman Remi Oyo.
Earlier his week the influential Nigerian daily This Day reported that former Ghanaian leader Jerry Rawlings had accused Obasanjo of sending disguised Nigerian troops to Ghana to assist in an alleged vote-rigging plot.
As the votes from Ghana’s presidential and parliamentary polls were counted Thursday, President John Kufuor, a friend of Obasanjo, and his ruling party were leading by a slight margin against Rawlings’ protege John Atta Mills.
