NIB Withdraws After Failed Attempt to Arrest NPP’s Chairman Wontumi

Tensions flared in the Ashanti regional capital Friday morning after a dramatic security operation at the private residence of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, ended in a standoff between security forces and loyal supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In the early hours, a joint team of National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and police officers surrounded the residence of the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman in Daban, Kumasi. The intent appeared to be an attempted arrest, though authorities have not yet disclosed the reasons behind the operation.

Chairman Wontumi was reportedly inside the house during the raid. According to his legal team, he assured the officers through intermediaries that he would respond to any formal summons on Monday, 26 May 2025. However, the show of force, featuring heavily armed personnel and nearly 20 official vehicles, sparked alarm among party members and quickly drew a crowd of agitated supporters.

Faced with growing public pressure and rising tensions, the NIB ordered a withdrawal of its operatives, temporarily diffusing the situation.

In a press briefing shortly after the pullback, Kwame Adom-Appiah, the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Secretary and a member of Wontumi’s legal team, described the raid as “immature” and “excessive.”

“When you arrive with about 20 vehicles to arrest someone who is not involved in any coup attempt or criminal enterprise, that raises serious questions,” Adom-Appiah told reporters. “This was unnecessary. A simple invitation would have been more appropriate and lawful.”

The incident has raised broader concerns about the conduct of state security agencies, particularly in politically sensitive regions. While the immediate confrontation has subsided, a visible police presence remains at the property, and some party supporters have vowed to stay put until a formal explanation is given.
