The National Identification Authority (NIA) workers’ strike has been called off following a directive from the National Labour Commission (NLC). The strike, which was declared by the Divisional Union of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU), was ruled inconsistent with established procedures for initiating industrial action.
The ruling came after a meeting on June 26, 2025, attended by representatives from the NIA, PSWU, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), and the Ministries of Finance, Labour, and Interior. During the session, the NLC confirmed that the Divisional Union had declared the strike without proper authorization, leading the National Union to apologize for the procedural lapse.
In its directive, the NLC ordered the immediate cessation of the strike and instructed the National Union to engage with relevant agencies, including the NIA, Ministry of Finance, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, to address the workers’ demand for a 20% operational support allowance.
The parties are expected to report progress to the NLC by July 3, 2025.
The strike action had caused disruptions at NIA offices nationwide, affecting services related to the issuance and management of Ghana Cards. The NLC’s swift intervention has restored normalcy and paved the way for negotiations to resolve the workers’ grievances.
