NHIS capitation policy failed due to delay in payment of grants – Former GMA boss

Former President for the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) says the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) capitation policy failed due to non-payment of grants.

In an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Former GMA President, Dr. Poku Adusei mentioned that some of the hospitals in the Ashanti region did not have enough funds to cater for patients on the NHIS capitation policy since monies owed them were not paid.

According to Dr. Opoku Adusei, private hospitals in Kumasi had no choice than to resort to co- payment, which means patients were made to pay cash upon arrival as part payments of hospital bills.

Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Maafo addressing the 25th Ashanti regional annual delegates’ conference of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kumasi on Sunday, 16 July 2017, said the mere fact that the implementers of the policy failed to expand it beyond the Ashanti Region is an indication that it was not good for the people.
