CARE International a non-governmental organisation (NGO), implementing a reproductive health project in the Wassa West District since 1996 has so far trained 280 volunteers to provide services to 107 communities in the area.
It has also collaborated efforts with the Ghana Health Service and some mining companies to train 20 doctors and medical assistants in the treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).
Mr Samuel Duh, CARE Health Sector Co-ordinator for Ghana, Togo and Benin said these at stakeholders’ durbar at Tarkwa on Thursday to mark the winding up of work on the project in the district.
He also said the NGO trained 107 non-formal health care providers, 50 community health nurses and midwives and 100 chemical sellers on how to handle STIs cases.
Mr Duah said the project was aimed at controlling fertility rate and reduce the spread of STIs and HIV/AIDS through capacity building of stakeholders to enable them efficiently create awareness in behavioural change among target groups.
He urged chiefs and other opinion leaders, community-based organisations, the district assembly and other stakeholders to support the NGO to achieve its objectives.
Madam Sophia Horna-Sam, Deputy Western Regional Minister commended CARE International and its collaborators for successfully implementing the project and appealed to the people to assist the NGO in its efforts.
She advised the youth to abstain from pre-marital sex and married couples to be faithful to their partners.
Osagyefo Kwamina Enmil 1V, Omanhene of Wassa Fiase Traditional Area, commended the NGO for its operation in the district, which he said, has been beneficial to the people.
Certificates and bicycles were presented to staff of the NGO and volunteers.
