NGO to assist Gnani Witches Home

Management AID(MAID), an NGO operating in the Northern Region, has embarked on a number of development projects to help alleviate the myriad of problems encountered by inmates of the Gnani Witches Home in the Yendi district.

The home is accommodating about 400 alleged witches and wizards who have been accused of either killing or causing the sickness or misery of relatives or neighbours.

Among the projects being executed by MAID are the construction of boreholes, places of convience, institution of a micro-credit scheme, renovation works and the installation of corn mill and a rice hurler.

The projects which run into millions of cedis are being funded by the Danish International Development Agency(DANIDA).

This was disclosed to The Mirror, by the Project Co-ordinator of MAID, Mohammed Alhassan Adam.

He said the organisation which was established in 1994, has been operating in the Yendi district since 1996. Other operational areas are Tamale rural, Zabzugu/Tatale and parts of the West Gonja district.

MAID is involved in the provision of a micro-credit scheme, water and sanitation, food security and service delivery among others, the co-ordinator added.

Mr Adam said the organisation is living up to its mission of reaching out to the most deprived and vulnerable in society.

He described the situation at the Gnani Witches Home as very appalling.

Mr Adam said the organisation has so far disbursed about ?200 million in the construction and renovation of huts for the alleged witches and wizards.

He said about four boreholes have been sunk at the camp, the Gnani and Yendi townships while some of the inmates are also benefitting from a micro-credit scheme enable themto set up or improve on their businesses.
