Tamale, May 3, GNA – A Tamale-based NGO dedicated in providing humanitarian and development services to deprived and needy communities is supporting 6,035 girls from 10 districts of the Northern Region to complete their basic education.
Mr Abdul Samed, Acting Programmes Manager of the Regional Advisory Information and Network Systems (RAINS) gave the names of the beneficiary districts as East Mamprusi, Nanumba, 855, Savelugu/Nanton, 602, Bole, 587 and Gushegu/Karaga, 626.
The rest are Yendi, 528, Tamale Rural, 557, Tolon/Kumbungu, 503, West Gonja, 315 and West Mamprusi, 394.
Mr Samed said the programme was to support parents of needy but brilliant girls to ensure that their education was not jeopardized. He held that the assistance would improve the welfare of the girls, as well as serve as a motivation for them to stay in school. He said apart from offering financial and material support to girls, RAINS also trains young people in Information Technology, Fashion and Design, batik tie and dye, secretarial and catering services. He said in 2004 alone, 250 trainees graduated from the RAINS’ three Vocational Training Institutions at the Mandela Development Centre, Gubdanda Training centre and the Bole Women’s Institute.
