NGO supports 15 Kumasi sex workers

Fifteen sex workers in Kumasi have benefitted from a skill-training programme that was launched by the West Africa Programme to Combat AIDS and STI (WAPCAS), a non-governmental organization (NGO), to help them to abandon the trade.

Mr Osei Boakye-Danquah, the Project Officer, said the organization would provide the sex workers who were into bread baking, start-up capital and equipment.

He said this was to economically empower them through the creation of alternative livelihood opportunities.

Mr Boakye-Danquah said the NGO has been campaigning to check the spread of HIV and AIDS among people who are mostly at risk in Ghana.

He made these known to journalists, who visited the office of the NGO in Kumasi, to acquaint themselves with its operations.

Mr Boakye-Danquah said the NGO had identified for support more than 500 sex workers, and was providing them with counseling, preventive and curative services.

WAPCAS Project Coordinator for the Northern Sector, Mr Baba Salifu Nuhu, said the NGO was using peer educators to teach people the proper use of condom among other things.**
