NGO plants 5,630 tree seedlings in C/R last year

Winneba (C/R) Aug. 5 GNA — The Environmental Concern Office, (ECO) a Non-Governmental Organisation in Winneba, has between September and December last year planted 5,630 Cassia tree seedlings towards protecting the environment.

Mr Peter Kuusaana, Executive Director of the NGO, made this known in an interview with Ghana News Agency in Winneba on Thursday.

He said the trees were planted at Gomoa Potsin in the Winneba Parish, Ajumako Bisease in the Ajumako Bisease parish, Gomoa Dawurampong and Awutu Bereku parishes.

Mr Kuusaana said this year the NGO has acquired 15,000 assorted tree seedlings to be planted at Komenda, Twifo Praso, Assin Foso, Ayanfuri, Abura Dunkwa and Jukwa parishes.

He said planting would start this month.

Seedlings for the programme have been acquired from the Winneba District office of the Forest Service Division of the Forestry Commission free of charge, he said.

The Executive director also said another 600 tree seedlings would be planted to climax this year’s Arbor Week at Abura Dunkwa this month.

Mr Kuusaana said the NGO has formed four Environmental Oversights Committees at Awutu Bereku, Winneba, Gomoa Dawurampong and Ajumako Bisease who engage in environmental clean-ups, tree planting and sensitization durbars.

Mr Luke Dickson, Finance and Administrative Officer of the NGO, commended the sponsors (Missio Aachen and Misereor) in Germany for their assistance to the NGO to undertake environmental programmes in the Region.

Mr Dickson appealed to other sponsors to go to the aid of the NGO to enable it to expand its activities to more communities across the country.
