Mampong (W/R) March 12, GNA – Mothers’ Care Charity Foundation (MCCF), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) at West Anaji in the Western Region, has instituted an awards scheme for the Mampong Metropolitan Assembly Primary School to encourage school enrolment and learning.
Evangelist (Mrs) Katherine Morrison, Programme Co-ordinator of the MCCF, announced this at the first awards ceremony at which six pupils of the school who performed well in class examinations last year were presented with prizes at Mampong near Takoradi. The NGO also presented clothing to members of the community at the function.
She expressed the need for the children to attend school to acquire skills and knowledge that would equip them to take up leadership and responsible positions in future. Evangelist Morrison asked parents to enrol their children in school as education was now free at the basic level. She advised the pupils to give their studies the deserved attention so that they could serve their communities and the country better in future.
She said the NGO assists children who complete primary schools and do not have financial support to continue their education to junior high schools (JHS) or acquire employable skills. Evangelist Morrison said the NGO was also poised to assist the people with free registration for the National Health Insurance Scheme, saying so far, it has supported 63 people to do so at Kansaworodo and Nktankoful in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.
Miss Juliana Baidoo, Head Teacher of the school, thanked the NGO for instituting the awards scheme as children in the area are usually reluctant to attend school while some drop out to go into early marriages or take to farming.
She noted that the situation is made worse by the fact that there is no JHS in the community and children have to walk long distances to attend those at neighbouring communities. Some of the inhabitants of the community, who spoke at the function called on the government to improve the road leading to the area and to provide them with potable water and a JHS.
