NGO calls on youth to avoid irregular migration

A nationwide education campaign aimed at combating irregular migration and human trafficking has been launched in Accra with a call on the youth to be mindful of such migration.

A statement signed by Mr Alfred Nsodu Mbinglo, Executive Director, Research and Counseling Foundation of African Migrant (RECFAM), called on the youth to look out for people who claim they have power to help them travel abroad.

“Such people will end up squandering your money,” the statement said.

It said the nationwide campaign was part of RECFAM’s core mandate of promoting safe migration and protecting vulnerable children.

The statement expressed worry over the constant and intense influx of migrants and many unaccompanied children travelling without approved documents through the desert.

It said RECFAM has begun assisting voluntary returnees and vulnerable children towards the socio-economic development of the country for the benefit of all.

The statement said: “Irregular migration exposes migrants to all kind of risks, including exploitation, trafficking and even death”.

It called on migrants to ignore any advertisement on job opportunities in any part of the world as such advertisements could lead them to worst forms of exploitations.

The statement called on stakeholders to join hands in the sensitization programme to combat irregular migration and human trafficking throughout the country.

It pledged RECFAM willingness to assist vulnerable children and provide the right information to migrants to become agents of change, support voluntary returnees and guide people through the right way to acquire the necessary document for travel.

The RECFAM is a non-governmental organization that promotes safe migration and the protection of vulnerable children.
