NGO calls for more women participation in politics

Women in the Wenchi Municipality have been advised to actively participate in the upcoming District Assembly elections as their inputs were very paramount in nation building.

Miss Araba Etrew Aicha, Project Officer for the Gender Studies and Human Rights Documentation Centre (GSHRDC) gave the advice during a community durbar on Tuesday at Wenchi.

The durbar, organized by GSHRDC, a non-governmental organization (NGO) in collaboration with Womankind UK, was attended by more than 60 women to whip up their interest in governance processes.

She said many women still felt that holding political office was the sole preserve of men and added that her organisation had trained more than 60 ladies from the University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in leadership.

Miss Aicha said statistics showed that the number of women in decision making positions in Ghana was not encouraging.

She said out of the 43 Assembly members in the Wenchi Municipal Assembly, only three were women.
