Bolgatanga, GNA- The Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) has trained about 780 persons in the Upper Region as at last year.
The Participants were drawn from the eight districts in the region. The Regional Director of Non-formal Education, Mr Issah Imoro Mohamadu, made this known to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Bolgatanga on Wednesday.
He said many of the people who went through the NFED could now read and write and also embark upon developmental activities. Mr Mohamadu stressed that the main aim of the NFED was not only to train the people to read and write but also train them to become functional literate and development oriented. He said through the NFED training programmes, most of the trainees could now consistently embark upon clean-up and communal labour exercises.
He explained further that the NFED also trained people in civic education and encouraged them to register with the National Insurance Scheme.
The Regional Director of the NFED pointed out that many people who passed through his outfit had become assembly members. He urged Ghanaians who are not literate to join the NFED, saying that there were benefits which could be derived from the concept and that could go a long way to reduce poverty.
