Kintampo (B/A), June 2, GNA – The Kintampo district staff of the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) have embarked on a tour of the communities to supervise adult classes and to ascertain the progress of the learners.
Mr. Edward Kisco Ameyaw, district officer in-charge of income-generating activities of the functional literacy programme told Ghana News Agency at Kintampo that, the exercise was meant to find out the active and dormant classes in the district.
He said 86 new classes had been organized in selected communities in the district this year, whilst 196 of them were started last year. The adults are studying Akan (Twi), Dagaare, Grunie, Dagbani and Kusaal in view of their large concentration in the area.
Mr. Ameyaw said some of the adult learners were engaged in income-generating projects to improve their economic activities. Mr. Ameyaw said learners of Cherehi were practicing beekeeping, whilst the people of Pramposo were engaged in snail farming.
He called on assembly members, chiefs, unit committees and religious leaders to organize illiterate adults to enrol with the functional literacy classes to enhance the development of the communities.
NFED zonal supervisors should redouble their efforts to keep their classes growing by ensuring that facilitators carried out their activities effectively.
Meanwhile, the division is arranging to train newly recruited facilitators across the country to begin new classes and to make more illiterates functionally literate.
