Takoradi, June 7, GNA – A weeklong training workshop for 272 facilitators of the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) in the Western Region opened at three centres in Sekondi-Takoradi on Tuesday. Addressing them at one of the workshops in Takoradi, Mr Matthew Atinyo, a member of the Central Training Team of the NFED said the workshop formed part of the re-training programme for the facilitators. He said a total of 4,800 facilitators were being re-trained throughout the country to enable them to set up new adult classes and help reduce the high rate of illiteracy and poverty. Mr Atinyo said national goals could not be achieved when there was a high rate of illiteracy.
He said: “Programmes to reduce poverty cannot succeed without paying attention to literacy because poverty and illiteracy are bedfellows”.
Mr Atinyo advised the facilitators to perform their duties with all seriousness in order to address issues of poverty, civic awareness and responsible citizenship. 7 June 05
