Newmont assures of continuous support to Assemblies

The External Relations Manager of Newmont Golden Ridge Limited, Akyem Mines, Mr Oduro-Kwateng Marfo has given the assurance that the company would continue to support the developmental efforts of District Assemblies in its mining area.

He gave the assurance at this year’s press soiree of the company for media personnel in the Eastern Region, organized at the weekend at Koforidua.

Mr Marfo said, despite the rising cost of production and the falling world market price of gold which had made the company reduce its staff in Africa by 230 personnel, the company was able to complete a number of development projects it initiated this year.

He mentioned some of the projects as the construction of nurses quarters, a doctors bungalow and a mechanized borehole for the New Abirim Government Hospital.

Mr Marfo said the company completed a 3.6 million Ghana Cedi water expansion project in the catchment area of the Akyem mines, and constructed a 280 cubic meter water reservoir for the NEW Abirim/Fosu Senior High School.

He said the company hopes to provide more support next year when the Newmont Akyem Development Foundation becomes operational with Newmont contributing one dollar to the Foundation for every ounce of gold sold, and contributing one percent of the annual net profit of the company.

Mr Marfo expressed the appreciation of the company to the host community, the media and other stakeholders of the Akyem Mines for their support.
