Accra, March 17, GNA – A good maternity ward equipped to provide quality care and services to its clients is one sure way of ensuring safe delivery to reduce the high maternal mortality rate and still births, Mrs Marian Tackie, Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Women in Development (NCWD) said in Accra.
Speaking at the commissioning of the new maternity block for the Communicable Diseases Hospital at Weija, Mrs Tackie said the environment in which delivery of new born babies were received into the world must therefore be very important and concern to all.
Speaking on behalf of Mrs Gladys Asmah, Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs, Mrs Tackie noted that government was determined to strengthen adolescent health service, to scale up cervical cancer screening and its management as well as provide essential obstetric care at all levels.
The building, built by TULSI Trust, a charitable non-governmental organisation at the cost of 120 billion cedis is to serve the people of Weija and its environs.
TULSI also furnished the room with basic furniture, curtains, television, electrical fixture, plastic cups, buckets and dustbins at the cost of additional five million cedis.
Mrs Tackie urged the hospital staff, chiefs and people of Weija and its environs to ensure its maintenance to serve the purpose of the building.
Mrs Mary Tandoh-Ashong, Senior Medical Assistant in-charge of the hospital commended TULSI for the donations to the hospital for the past six years and appealed to them to help them to acquire telephone to enhance the communication system.
Mrs Jaishree Rao, TULSI Trust Coordinator, assured the hospital of their monthly visit donations and urged them to sustain and improve on their culture of maintenance. 17 March 04
