The New Juaben Municipal Assembly on Wednesday began massive decongestion exercise in Koforidua, to ensure that the city befit its status as Eastern Regional capital and the seat of administration for the assembly.
The security agencies assisted the Municipal Guards Unit, personnel from Public Works Department and Works Department of the assembly to carry out the exercise.
The exercise concentrated on the demolishing of structures erected on streets, pavements and other unauthorised places thus creating traffic congestion.
Trading activities on pavements were also halted. The areas targeted were the Central Business District area and the new lorry station.
The premises of Ghana Commercial Bank, Agricultural Development Bank, Unibank sand and Pintoa Wala behind the Koforidua Polyclinic were also aimed at.
Mr Alex Asamoah, Municipal Chief Executive told Ghana News Agency that the exercise would be sustained.
He said a team would be tasked to patrol the municipality to achieve the ultimate results.
Mr Asamoah said the exercise was not politically motivated and rather aimed at ensuring that the right thing was done.
He expressed the need for every person to adhere to the lay down rules that would facilitate the assembly’s development agenda.
He urged the security agencies to go about the exercise in a manner that even resistance from affected persons would be handled with tact and professionalism.
