New ID cards for Butchers

Accra, May 16, GNA – The Ghana Co-Operative Butchers Association (GCBA) has embarked on an exercise to re-register all genuine Butchers and meat sellers in the markets and issue them with identity cards (ID). According to the General Secretary of the Association, Alhaji Prince Issifu Musah, the exercise would also enable the GCBA to know the exact number of Butchers and meat sellers in each market throughout the country.

In a circular to all Market Leaders and Chief Butchers in Accra signed by Alhaji Musah, it said the attention of the Police and the other security agencies had been drawn to the withdrawal of the old ID cards and warned members of the Association to obtain the new one to avoid the risk involved.

It urged Market Leaders and Chief Butchers to ensure that only genuine Butchers and meat handlers registered for future identification purposes and to remove those with dubious characters from the meat trade.

The statement explained that the exercise had become necessary following a question posed by the Food and Drugs Board as to who was a Butcher and the plan by the Metropolitan Assembly AMA to license all Butchers selling meat in the market to eliminate quacks. It said members should be able to produce their ID cards on demand or display them in their shops for the inspection of the authorities and customers.
