New ENT clinic inaugurated at Korle Bu

Accra, Feb. 1, GNA – Dr Emmanuel Kitcher, Head of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Clinic of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, on Thursday said most common infections of the ear, nose and throat were man made and preventable.

Speaking at the inauguration of an 845 million-cedi refurbished ENT Clinic at the Hospital, he said most of the infections were caused by irresponsible behaviour including road traffic accidents, tobacco and alcohol use.

The Clinic now housed in the old Administration Block of the Hospital would now attend to about 150 to 200 patients daily in a more spacious and fully equipped clinic.

The new clinic, among others things, has 10 consulting rooms, doctors and nurses rest rooms and a speech therapy unit.

He said that those, who worked in noisy environments, also stood the chance of having hearing problems and urged members of the public to have regular checks before things got of out of hands.

Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital, expressed the hope that people would now see the wisdom in building a new Administration Block saying, “Converting the old block into a full ENT Clinic was a wise decision”.

He said the new ENT Clinic with modern equipment was the most modern in the West Africa Sub-Region and it was his hope that all departments would become clinics to help ease the burden on Korle-Bu. He said other departments needed renovations citing the expansion programme of the Surgical and Medical Emergency (SME) Unit, which was near completion.

This would increase the bed capacity from 34 to 80, he said, and appealed to the Government to release funds for the completion of the Medical Block.
