New ECOWAS Commission President pays tribute to predecessor

Accra, Feb. 18, GNA – Mr Victor Gbeho, newly appointed President of the ECOWAS Commission has lauded the achievements of his predecessor which he described as not easily surmountable. He said Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas had rejuvenated ECOWAS as an organization and said it was only an inspiring leadership that could take over and continue what he did.

Mr Gbeho, who was Ghana’s former Foreign Affairs Minister, said by the provisions of the ECOWAS constitution should the Commission’s President failed to complete his term of office, the delegating country could exercise the option to nominate another citizen to complete the remaining term. He said this was the option that Ghana had exercised by nominating him to complete Dr Chambas’ term.

Mr Gbeho said having worked for the UN for many years and a former Minister of Foreign affairs, he had a long experience in international relations and diplomacy.

He said he would bring his rich experience to bear on ensuring that the Commission’s agenda was thoroughly seen through. Mr Gbeho stressed the need for ECOWAS states to adhere to good governance, poverty reduction, peace and security and redouble efforts to speed up the integration process. He pledged to work hard to fast track the integration. 18 Feb. 10
