Need for the military to collaborate with civilians

Bawku(UER), Sept. 13, GNA – Mr Mahami Salifu Former Upper East Regional Minister on Wednesday stressed the need for the military to collaborate with civilians to maintain law and order without undermining the country’s democratic dispensation.

He said the role of the military to protect the sovereignty of the country should always serve as a guiding principle to resist adventurous people who would invade their ranks for their own aggrandisement at the expense of the state.

Mr Salifu made the call when presenting a bull to personnel of the Airborne Force Detachment at Bawku.

He was instrumental in the establishment of the Detachment in the area to prevent ethnic conflicts.

Mr Salifu commended the military for their tireless efforts in maintaining a stable environment for the development of the area and was optimistic that they would not relent in their efforts. Lieutenant Emmanuel Sosu, Officer Commanding the Detachment Force, said the prevailing peace within the municipality should not be taken for granted and urged all civil societies to intensify their efforts to sustain the peace. He said the spate of armed robberies should serve as a wake up call for the various security services to curb the menace to give the people the needed peace. Mr Abdul-Rahman Gumah, Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, said construction works had begun at Bazua for the military to have a permanent site to deploy quickly in the event of any emergency in the region. 13 Sept. 06
